“All children can learn and thrive.”

The science of learning and development shows that this idea is more than just a belief. It is a
scientific truth—and a foundation upon which we can design and build learning environments
so that every young person can achieve their full potential.

— Science of Learning and Development Alliance (2020)

Modern Developmental Science Research

Advances in the science of learning and development now provide clear guidance for creating learning environments that advance equity, narrow achievement gaps, and support student mental health and well-being.

The Science of Learning and Development Alliance unites leading researchers—including Pamela Cantor, Linda Darling-Hammond, David Osher, Karen Pittman, and Todd Rose—to integrate insights from neuroscience, developmental science, and the learning sciences.

Their landmark 2020 report translates this research into clear design principles for schools and youth-serving systems, highlighting the malleability of human potential and the critical role of relationships, environments, and meaningful learning opportunities in shaping development.

Leaders from major education organizations—including NEA, AFT, and CASEL—participate in the SoLD Alliance, adding national expertise and practical experience to this work.

This initiative translates modern developmental science into a standard of care for Washington’s public schools.

The youth mental-health crisis is a system design failure — and science now shows how to fix it.

The Washington Youth Mental Health & Public School Promise Initiative is a project of the Center for Inspired Learning, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 82‑4387189). Contributions support this public‑interest work and are tax‑deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
